Question: Explain one advantage and one disadvantage for LEDCs like
Kenya of incresing the number of visitors from MEDCs
Benefits
- Since tourism is essentially a service based industry, it
provides relatively more jobs than any other economic
sector. The industry is labour intensive and hence its
expansion generates more job opportunities than an
equivalent expansion in other sectors of the economy. Thus there is an increase in job opertunities for locals
- Tourism contributes greatly to Government Revenue through
license fees, customs and exercise duty, VAT on tourism
services, landing fees, parking fees, passenger service charge, entry fees to game parks as well as income tax levied on employees in the tourism industry. The generated revenues play a pivotal role in the overall development of the
economy.
- It is a relatively non-pollutant industry which if
properly managed, can contribute to the conservation and
promotion of our natural and cultural heritage
- It acts as a catalyst for the development of other
sectors of the economy of many countries.
- Increased touristry means that more conservation areas such as Tsavo
can be managed efficiently. This both benefits the enviroment and indeed
tourists too (millions of visitors visit Tsavo each year to see nature in
its natural enviroment)
Drawbacks
- The government barely invest any of their revenue in enhancing services for locals, Insted
most of the money goes to luxury lodges, transport costs, and foreign
package tour operators. Even revenue from park entry fees goes straight into
the central government’s treasury.
- As conservation areas expand, People have been denied the right to graze
on their land now that it is within national park boundaries. Thus locals
have to obey the rules and regulations of the national park
- Tourism has also been linked to an increase in prostitution
in some areas and, as a result of their earnings, a lack of
respect for traditional authorities among male and female
prostitutes.
- Many locals are forced to move away from the city because they cannot afford houses and
since the price of confectionaries have increased because of tourists willing to pay more.
- Litter polution caused my tourists = bad for enviroment
- Vast ammounts of tourists climbing mount kenya may cause footpath errosion
- People visiting an LEDC who caries a disease such as the flu could cause serious damage to the locals. People from MEDC have vacines and a strong emune system that can generally cope with a virus such as the flu. However if they pass it onto a people from LEDC, their emune systems are generally weaker than ares and may not be able to cope as efficienty as ours.
There are just some of the advantages and disadvantages of increasing the number of visitors from MEDC, obviously there are a lot more. I’m not sure if this is what you were looking for but at least I answered
