kruger national park travel guide
When is the best time to visit the Kruger Park for a safari?
The best time to go on a Kruger Park Safari is during the summer months, November and December. It is hot and humid but not scorching, and you can expect continues rainfall or the occasional late afternoon showers to cool off the day. It is also the time in the Kruger Park when lots of young animals are born. It is beautiful!
How many days does a proper Kruger safari take?
It is recommended to book your stay for about two to four nights. It will give you more than enough time to really enjoy the animals, go on a 4X4 game drive and enough time to see the Big Five and relax at the beautiful camps, hotels and lodges.
What should you pack in for your Kruger holiday and safari?
An African safari is one of those one-in-a-lifetime experiences so to make your trip the most comfortable and enjoyable we recommend a few items that you must bring along.
- Cotton clothing in neutral colours is needed for the game drives, but please avoid whites as it attracts certain bugs at night.
- Most importantly very comfortable shoes for the bush walk. Something such as boots or track shoes.
- You’ll need sandals to wear when you’re relaxing at one of Kruger Park’s lodges and enjoying a delicious meal.
- Please pack in shorts as the Kruger Park is generally a warm place. It is also required for the walks and warm midday periods.
- In order to unwind from a hot and enduring bush walk, pack in your swimming costume as most of the Kruger Park’s accommodation facilities have swimming pools. It is advisable to consult your travel agent on the facilities of the place you’re staying at.
- Lots of sun block, a hat, lip balm and your sunglasses.
- If you wear contact lenses pack in an extra pair of lenses and remember the solution.
- The Kruger Park is all about sightseeing so please do not forget to pack in your camera, video camera and binoculars. Remember the battery for the digital camera as well as the video camera, and any other electrical cords and plugs necessary.
Accommodation. Decide if you want accommodation like bungalows, chalets and camping (of which there are plentiful accommodation types of available in the Kruger National Park) or do you prefer accommodation that is more luxurious and stylish. The Kruger Park has 21 self-catering rest camps that consist of camping facilities, bungalows and huts of which the latter is fully furnished and equipped. These camps are official, enclosed facilities with amenities.
If you prefer a luxurious, stylish and world-class African safari in terms of service and the interior, you can choose between seven private lodge concessions and 11 designated private safari lodges in the Kruger National Park. The Kruger lodges offer a variety of activities including morning and late afternoon 4X4 game drives with an experienced game ranger and tracker, delectable cuisine prepared by professional chefs, guided bush walks and in some cases wellness spas.
- Passports and Visas. When visiting South Africa, a full passport is essential and should be valid for at least six months after your return. If you are visiting the Kruger National Park in South Africa or Botswana you don’t need a visa; however you will have to have a visa for Zimbabwe
- Travel insurance. Most banks and credit cards offer travel insurance so make sure you have one in case of medical emergencies and missed connections. Also get a copy of your plan coverage.
- Immunization. The Kruger National Park is situated in a malaria area so visit your doctor at least three weeks before flying to South Africa to get prescriptive anti-malaria medication. And remember to bring lots of insect repellant. Stock up on general medical supplies before leaving your country as well as any chronic medication.
