national monuments list us
We’ll be three days in DC. Other places besides these that you may recommend?
We are visiting DC for three days and want to visit as many of these places as possible. Are there any other we should visit as well? If there’s not enough time, which ones would you scratch off? This is our list for three days:
Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Washington Monument
Jefferson Memorial
FDR Memorial
Korean War Memorial
Lincoln Memorial
Vietnam War Memorial
WWII Memorial
The White House (just sightseeing from outside since we were not able to get tickets from our representative
, too bad)
US Capitol (I reserved a ticket online, but we also got a walking tour scheduled with an employee of Richard Burr, our state’s senator)
Supreme Court
Smithsonian Museums ( We are primarily interested in the American History, Natural History, Air and Space, and the National Portrait Gallery)
National Archives
Holocaust Museum
Arlington Cemetery
National Cathedral
Zoo
I know, it’s a long list.
You won’t be able to do everything within three days unless you are superhuman (all the more reason to come back to our lovely city later!).
One day, starting early, could include:
A museum (all Smithsonians & Holocaust open at 10 AM)
Lunch at a museum cafe or in Georgetown or Penn Quarter
Explore the monuments and memorials in the evening (I highly recommend this, it’s a great way to maximize your time and the monuments are lit up beautifully; 100% safe at dusk)
If you do monuments in the evening, the day can be spent doing things which are closed early, like the museums. However, the Capitol, outside the White House, Archives, and Supreme Court are truly unique to DC, so see those even before the museums – you can see fossils anywhere but not the Declaration of Independence!
The zoo is really great, but it is truly just a zoo so not a top priority.
With only three days, do as much as possible but that is a very ambitious list and I salute you if you complete it all.
Have a great trip!
