One of America’s original planned cities, Philadelphia is the brainchild of William Penn, who laid out the city plan in the late 17th century. In fact, the downtown area still follows his plan today. Now the City of Brotherly Love is home to a dazzling array of attractions, including some unique historical sites. For those planning a trip, here is a short list of places that should be in your plans.

Liberty Bell: First and foremost among Philadelphia’s attractions is this symbol of American democracy. Cast in 1753, it features the biblical phrase “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land,” and the famous crack has done nothing to silence its fame.

Independence Hall: You’ll find the Liberty Bell in this landmark, where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were crafted. It’s part of Independence National Historical Park, which contains 20 buildings in all.

Lights of Liberty: This evening show uses the latest technology to tell the story of the American Revolution. Five-story pictures recreating historical events are displayed on the buildings where some of those events took place.

Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier: This monument honors the many anonymous soldiers who died during the fight for America’s freedom from the British; the Revolutionary War.

Rittenhouse Square: This square, one of William Penn’s original five, is a peaceful park in the middle of a bustling metropolis.

Philadelphia Museum of Art: One of the largest museums in the country, this place has one of the more diverse art collections available anywhere. It will require at least a half-day to explore.

Philadelphia Zoo: This place calls itself America’s first zoo and is home to over 1,300 animals, many of them endangered or threatened.

Penn’s Landing: This site along the Delaware River hosts everything from street performers to magnificent yachts, along with the Seaport Museum.

Love Park: In this park, you’ll find Robert Indiana’s famous “Love” sculpture and has been captured many times on the small and big screens.

Harbor Cruises: One way to get a glimpse of the city’s distinctive skyline is to take one of the many guided water tours available for a variety of prices and lengths.
