big bend national park canoe trip?

im going to big bend national park in texas this winter and id like to go on a canoe or float trip there, . the kind where just me and my buddy can go off by ourselves and we can do it on our own pace and have fun by ourselves with out a guide or a bunch of other people, also one that would last a couple days so we can camp out along the trip. how can we make that happen? we got no equipment, were enexperienced, not to much money cause were in college, and we would need somebody to pick us up at the end of the trip.
thanks

Notwithstanding the fact that you have no equipment, let me just say that it’s a little foolish to want to do this knowing that you are inexperienced. I’ve been to Big Bend, and it’s not exactly an easy place for someone to bail you out of any trouble you might get into. The Rio Grande is unpredictable in winter, which is flash flood season, and you have no idea what to look for or how to avoid getting swept away.

If you are absolutely convinced that you need to do this trip, you should contact some of the local outfitters (link below) for advice. I’d recommend Desert Sports, because they are one of the closest to the park and operate year-round. They are also well-qualified to come rescue your a-s when you turn up missing, so you’d like for them to know what you look like before your parents have to provide a recent photo.

You definitely don’t want cheap equipment, because some of the canyons the RG runs through are narrow and the water will rage. Make sure you have your stuff lashed securely so when your boat overturns you won’t lose it all, and make sure it’s in drybags so you don’t spend the whole trip trying to dry stuff out. And make sure someone knows the details of your trip, and that you check in with them ASAP before and after. Cell phone coverage is pretty spotty out there, and there are only three pay phones in the park that I remember, and even those are pretty remote.

Good luck!
