national park itineraries
Anyone have a good 3-4 day backpacking trip for an experienced hiker through Glacier National Park?
Or, do you have a good website with hiking itineraries?
Going in early August so snow should not be a problem.
You have so many options! Glacier is a backpackers paradise. Check out the ‘08 backpackers guide (link below) for pretty much all the info you need for planning. It lists all the main trails, the backcountry campgrounds along the trails, and the distances between them. It’s great for trying to put together a trip, since really only you know how far/steep you’re comfortable going in a day. When you’re looking at routes, remember that crossing a pass means you’ll have a steep climb to do to get there. You say that you’re experiened so I’m sure you probably already know that, but it’s something often overlooked in trip planning.
There’s alot of great stuff to see around Many Glacier, and up into the Belly River area (NE part of the park) is gorgeous as well, and much less visited. The northern traverse, which goes across the top of the park, is gorgeous too. Dawson/Pitamakan passes in Two Medicine is a nice loop, although definitely wouldn’t take up 3-4 days. Generally south of Two Medicine there isn’t alot to see. The Nyack/Coal Creek area is mostly just forest, with overgrown trail, and not as scenic- but it is the only area in the park where you can camp outside of established backcountry campgrounds without a special permit, if thats something you’re looking for.
If you have more specific questions, feel free to email me. Looking through the backcountry guide is a great way to start picking out a trip. You may be able to reach one of the backcountry rangers through the phone number on the page below, but they’re usually not fully staffed this time of year and very busy trying to sort out advanced permit regulations.
The link to the guide is on this page, along with alot of other good information:
