HELP PLAN my trip to GLACIER NATIONAL PARK MT From Boston?
Hi ,
My Bf and I are traveling from Boston to Glacier national park then to a ranch in Jackson hole in Aug 2009.
We need help from figuring our which airport to fly in and out of then where to camp within Glacier national park. etc. Do we ship our supplies a head. Is there a store where we can buy supplies. WE would like to fly from Boston to an airport near the park on Wed Aug 6 then drive to Jackson hole whyoming by Sunday night…. Any trips advice. from hotel to camping to rental cars to advice would be fabulous.
Thanks for your help.
You have a ton of different options as far as trip planning goes, although it depends on how much you want to see and how much time you have. If you want to start your trip by seeing Glacier NP, there are a couple of airports within a reasonable distance. Great Falls, MT is about 2 hours away from the park’s main entrance from the east side, St. Mary. If you want to start on the west side of the park, you can fly into Kalispell via the Glacier Park International airport, which is also about 2 hours away (in the other direction). Flying into this airport is probably a bit more expensive because it’s smaller, but both of them are relatively small so you won’t be able to get a direct flight to either from Boston. Bring with you whatever you can on the plane. You can stock up on supplies of any sort in both of these places, but why buy stuff you already have?
The park offers a variety of frontcountry campgrounds along Going To The Sun Road, the main/only road that cuts through the park. Starting on the West side moving east, your options include Apgar, Fish Creek, Sprague Creek, Avalanche, Rising Sun, and St. Mary. There are also campgrounds in Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and smaller ones in Cut Bank, Bowman Lake, Kintla Lake, and a few more remote places. There are also way more backcountry campgrounds, if you’re looking to go backpacking. I can offer more specific suggestions and help trip planning if you let me know what you’re interested in doing while there. Camping at night or staying in a lodge? Scenic driving? Day hikes? How long, milage wise? Backpacking? Anything specific you want to see? How much time are you planning on spending here?
If you’re determined to leave out of Jackson Hole, WY, I would suggest visiting Yellowstone NP and Grand Teton NP (they’re right next to each other) on your way down there from Glacier. Both are beautiful places as well, with much different scenery. I worked/lived in Glacier for a summer so I know alot about it, but I need a little more info to give good planning advice
