national park weekend
How strict are the National Forrests for keeping dogs on leashes on the trails?
I have two very well-behaved dogs that are trained for trail running, having run several thousands of miles on trails. They do not wander off the trail or stop and bother hikers/runners. This weekend I am going running in a national forest. Once we get on the trail away from the populated parts of the park, will I have any problems if I let my dogs off their leashes?
Letting dogs run off leashes angers many people and is against the law in many places that don’t have an ‘off leash area’. Don’t be selfish. Nobody else loves your dogs like you do. Just seeing dogs off leash can be threatening to other people and impair their ability to enjoy the park. It’s not a dog run, so don’t treat it like one. Respect the park and other people.
And pick up every mess they leave behind. Nothing will give you a worse rap than leaving ’surprises’ for others in the area. You wouldn’t want to be confronted with a human bowel movement on the trail, so don’t leave your dogs’.
