national parks map california
Website with National Park road trip routes.?
I live in Southern California and would like to hit Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon.
Do you know of a website that can map a route for specifically these places and also inform me of places to stay along the way.
Have you tried http://www.mapquest.com/? Go there and click on the Directions button to map your route.
Personally, I prefer to use Microsoft Streets and Trips which is a commercial product costing about $40-$50 (software only). Streets and Trips will allow you to enter a starting point, stop points and ending point. The software optionally displays information on hotels/motels, restaurants, gas stations, campgrounds, hospitals, parks and a number of other places. There are other commercial mapping software products with features similar to Streets and Trips. I’ve used Streets and Trips to map road trips of up to 4,000 miles and it’s never let me down.
I’ve done a road trip similar to the one you described. I started in LA and went to Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon north rim and Grand Canyon south rim before returning to LA. You can easily insert Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park between the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon to complete your trip. Using Streets and Trips I came up with the following routing, mileages and drive times. I’ve also included some of my thoughts on hotel/motel accommodations based on my experience.
LA to Springdale (Zion National Park) starting from LAX – 440 miles / 6 hrs 30 mins
You can stay at Zion Lodge in the park but it would be cheaper to stay at one of the many motels in Springdale. Some motels are within walking distance of the park visitor center where you board the park shuttle during the summer months. No private vehicles allowed in the park from May to October.
Zion to Bryce – 85 miles / 1 hr 45 minutes
Consider stopping at Cedar Breaks National Monument which will take you a little out of your way but worth the time. It looks like a mini Bryce Canyon. You can stay at the Bryce Canyon Lodge but Best Western Rubys Inn is cheaper and is located just outside the park. The lodge cabins are a real treat because you will be situated less than a hundred yards from the rim overlooking the amphitheater.
Bryce to Grand Canyon North Rim – 157 miles / 3 hrs 15 mins
Stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge on the north rim. The only other lodging alternatives are Fredonia located about 75 miles from the north rim, Jacob Lake about 44 miles from the rim or the Kaibab Lodge about 18 miles from the rim. Be sure to drive out to Cape Royal while at the north rim for beautiful vistas and a view of the Colorado River.
Grand Canyon North Rim to Monument Valley- 245 miles / 5 hrs 20 mins
I recommend you stay at Gouldings Lodge just outside Monument Valley. You can also stay at a motel in Kayenta located about 22 miles from the valley. Be sure to take a Navajo guided tour of the valley which will take you deeper in the the monument than the general public is allowed. You can make tour reservations at Gouldings Lodge where the tours start. There are other tour alternatives starting in Kayenta but I’ve always gone with the tours at Gouldings.
Monument Valley to Grand Canyon South Rim (Grand Canyon Village) – 176 miles / 4 hrs 5 mins
There are a number of motel style accommodations and the El Tovar Hotel in Grand Canyon Village. The El Tovar, Kachina Lodge, Thunderbird Lodge and Bright Angel Lodge are located on the rim while the Maswik Lodge and Yavapai Lodge are located a short distance away from the rim in the surrunding forest. I find the rim accommodations a bit too touristy and prefer the quiteness of the Maswik and Yavapai Lodges. Both are within walking distance to the rim. You can also stay at a chain motel in Tusayan outside the park about 9 miles from the village.
Grand Canyon Village to LA – 590 miles / 9 hrs
You can stop and spend a night in Barstow to avoid the 9 hour drive. I’ve also stopped in Kingman and Laughlin to break up that long drive.
Having done this trip before I know you’re going to have a terrific time. Enjoy!
