national parks services jobs
I want to get a job in the national park services?
How do I do this? I’m 18, high school graduate, by the time I would work for a national park I would have one semester of college done (about 12 credits).
This is my dream.
what about simple jobs like food service, janitorial services, or park rangers?
I am guessing you want a government type job with the National Park Services, such as Fish and Wildlife, Search and Rescue, that type of thing?
If so, you will need to be at least 18 (which you are)
- have a high school diploma (which you have)
- be a valid citizen of your state / and the country
- have a clean record (no drug history, no criminal history, etc.)
- be willing to submit to a polygraph (lie detector test)
Since it is similar to law enforcement in that you will be enforcing the laws of the national park areas, you will be subject to law enforcement type training and a background check, as well as a health exam to make sure you are fit for the job (there are no height requirements; do not worry about things like that)… you may need to be familiar or become familiar with firearms (however, if you are not familiar with them now, I suggest you wait for training. It is better to be trained properly right off the bat then go into the training with bad habits you learned from possibly the wrong source); you will need to learn CPR / rescue skills; you will probably also have to spend some time away in training (about 6 months is what I’m guessing).
It’s not going to be easy. But with determination and persistence, and as long as you have no criminal history, you should get there – and I think you should go for it
I was once going to go into police work – and the best advice I ever got was from a 4′9″ lady – who was captain of the riot team in her police department. She said to our class, “If you think you are tired during the obstacle course, don’t quit. Just don’t quit. You can die when you get home.”
That message will serve you well if you have go through any kind of similar training for your position in the National Park Services – which I’m guessing you may be subject to.
Good luck!!!
Edit: Here is a link I found with several pages of good information on working in national park services – this one link contains what you may need to go through to get there:

Edit 2: I don’t know about the other jobs because I myself was interested in a Park Ranger job – I saw you mentioned that in your additional details. The link I gave (above) before I saw your additional details gives very good information on what it will require of you to become a Park Ranger. I personally think it would be a very rewarding job and I commend you for thinking of taking on such a job.
