zion national park slot canyons
Are there any dry slot canyons in Zion National Park?
I’ll be hiking in Zion in the third week of March. I’d like to explore some slot canyons but not if they’re filled with water.
Below is a web link with information on Zion canyons. Judging by the descriptions, it looks like the only dry canyon listed is Lodge Canyon.
The only Zion canyon I’ve hiked is the Narrows which you probably know is really, really wet. It was the first and only time I’ve hiked in a wet canyon and I found the experience to be quite enjoyable. I had just half a day so managed to get only a couple of miles up from the mouth at the end of the River Walk trail. It’s pretty slow going because most of the hiking is in the river. My average speed was about one mile per hour. The average depth of the water was no more than 2 feet with the deepest section being 4 feet. The river bottom is continually changing so it hard to predict what the maximum depth will be.
If you haven’t hike the Narrows before I highly recommend you try it. The second link below is to the Zion Adventures web site. You can find some good information on the Narrows there. I rented river boots (Canyoneers), a waterproof backpack and walking stick from them to make the hike. They also have dry suits if you plan to make the hike during the colder months. I hiked the Narrows in October and the water temperature was cold but not so cold that I needed a dry suit. The insulation of the river boots was enough to keep my feet warm. The water temperature in March is about 10 degrees colder than in October and is too cold to be in for any length of time without some kind of protection like a wet of dry suit.
Zion Adventures (Zion Adventure Center) is located just outside Zion National Park in Springdale. It’s located across the highway from the Quality Inn about a quarter mile from the park entrance.
You can get weather information from Zion Adventures or the park visitor center. You don’t want to be in the Narrows if it looks like rain. Have a good time in Zion. Take care and be safe.
