Innumerable monuments exquisitely carved temples, stupas, forts and palaces are dotted all over the State. It is richly endowed with spectacular mountains, rivers and dense forests offering an exciting panorama of wildlife in sylvan surroundings. Bhopal, Pachmarhi, Kanha & Jabalpur are some of the main attractions.

Bhopal represents a harmonic symphony of old and new. The old city of Bhopal is a maze of narrow streets, crumbling palaces, colourful markets and beautiful mosques, whilst the new city is amongst the greenest cities of India. Major attractions include the Taj-ul-Masjid, Bharat Bhawan, the Tribal Habitat Museum and Van Vihar – a safari park. Sanchi is known for its stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars dating back from the 3rd century BC to 12 century AD.

Pachmarhi is a lovely hill resort surrounded by low lying rugged hills, ravines, beautiful forests, breathtaking waterfalls and serene pools. The places to visit include Jata Shankar – a sacred cave dedicated to Lord Shiva; Pandava caves, splendorous big falls and a fairy pook and finally the Priyadarshini or the Dhupgarh Point known for its spectacular view of sunset. A visit to the Bhojpur and Bhimbetka caves – a UNESCO World Heritage site is a must.

The Kanha National Park covers an area of 940 square kilometres and is one of the most well known tiger reserves worldwide. There are herds of spotted deer, beautiful antelopes, the black buck, the barking deer and the rare barasingha, the Swamp Deer. There are 175 varieties of birds in Kanha.

In Jabalpur, the capital city of the Gond Kings, visit Bhedaghat where you get to see the marble rocks that rise to a hundred feet on either side of the river Narmada. These white rocks with views of black and dard green volcanic seams are truly majestic and have quite a magical effect on moonlit nights.
